A gentle forest stream flows past a fawn rabbit sitting on a mossy patch among daisies and small purple flowers. Golden sunlight filters through the trees, and the whole woodland seems to be waking up. The morning reading is a joyful verse to start the day, a reminder that today is a gift from the Lord.
This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 118 is a song of thanksgiving sung at Israel’s festivals. Just before this verse, the psalm speaks of a stone the builders rejected that has become the chief cornerstone, a passage the New Testament applies to Jesus. The day the Lord has made is a day of rescue and celebration, and the right response is to rejoice and be glad in it.
Every day is a gift, even the ordinary ones. We did not make this day, and we cannot control most of what will happen in it. But we can choose how we receive it. Like the stream that keeps singing over the stones, we can meet today with thanks and look for reasons to be glad.
