The Water Remembers

A drink becomes a moment of curiosity when the rabbit notices the face below his own. With one paw still in the pool, he pauses over the reflection as though the water has introduced him to someone worth considering. The familiar act of looking at oneself becomes unexpectedly charming through his attention.

“As in water face answereth to face, so the heart of man to man.”
Proverbs 27:19 (KJV)

This proverb places a reflected face beside the human heart. The water makes an outward likeness visible, while the heart concerns the inward life through which we are known. It invites reflection on character and on how our deeper concerns find expression in our encounters with others.

We rarely see ourselves as clearly as a still pool reflects a face. Habits, motives, and assumptions can become easier to recognize when we consider how we respond to people: what makes us impatient, whose needs we notice, and when we are willing to be generous.

Such reflection can be honest without becoming harsh. We can acknowledge what needs changing and appreciate the good that is growing. May we be willing to look carefully at our own hearts, receive thoughtful correction, and let what we learn lead to greater kindness.
