When the Sky Gets Bigger

Sometimes a familiar garden feels larger simply because we look beyond its edges. With his long ears lifted above the lawn, the fawn rabbit sits beneath an open sky, giving the quiet moment an air of contemplation. The flowers and trees frame his small corner of the world, while everything above them invites a wider view.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
Psalm 19:1 (KJV)

Psalm 19 begins by attending to the heavens as a witness to God’s glory. “Firmament” refers to the sky or expanse overhead. In the verses that follow, day and night continue this wordless testimony; later, the psalm turns to God’s instruction and a prayer about the speaker’s own words and thoughts.

That movement from the vast sky to the inward life gives the passage a quiet intimacy. Wonder can do more than impress us. It can help us reconsider our place in the world and become more attentive to how we live within it.

Beside the rabbit, the open sky offers room for perspective. Our concerns still matter, but they need not occupy every part of our attention. Looking up may give us a moment to breathe, notice beauty, and remember how much exists beyond the task immediately before us. May that wider view leave us grateful, humble, and ready to attend more kindly to the day.
