The Softest Sabbath

Those little pink paws in the air make rest look almost comically complete. Among the daisies, the white rabbit’s sprawled pose gives the scene its charm: for this brief moment, there seems to be nothing on his schedule. Watching him can make us aware of how tightly we have been holding our own shoulders.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28 (KJV)

Jesus addresses people who are weary and burdened, inviting them to come to him. In the following verses, he asks them to learn from his gentleness and humility. The rest he offers belongs to a relationship of trust and discipleship, reaching deeper than a pause between tasks.

The rabbit’s repose provides a lighthearted entry into a serious need. We can become so accustomed to pressure that we treat weariness as something to ignore. This invitation gives us permission to acknowledge what we are carrying and bring it honestly to Christ.

A quiet pause may be a beginning: a moment to pray, release an unnecessary demand, or accept support. Lord, meet us in our weariness and teach us how to live with the gentleness you offer.
