One Petal Too Close

Curiosity has a particular charm when the whole world still seems new. The little rabbit leans toward a daisy until scarcely a petal separates his nose from the bloom. In a field full of flowers, his attention settles on just one, making the encounter feel wonderfully personal.

“The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;”
Song of Solomon 2:12 (KJV)

This verse belongs to a passage in which the beloved announces that winter has passed and invites his love to come away with him. Flowers and birdsong give the invitation its freshness and joy. The “turtle” here is a turtledove, whose voice joins the other signs of spring.

The rabbit’s close inspection of a single flower echoes that delight in a world coming into bloom. Familiar beauty can become easy to overlook, especially when we are preoccupied. His little encounter reminds us that attention can make something ordinary feel newly discovered.

We cannot make every season of life feel like spring, but we can remain open to what is growing within the season we have. May a small beauty catch our attention today, and may we give ourselves time to enjoy it.
