Ukrainian Silver

A Ukrainian silver rabbit for meat and fur, also known as the Poltava Silver.

Origin

The Ukrainian Silver, better known as the Poltava Silver (Poltavske Sriblo), was approved in 1952. It was developed at the Petrovsky fur farm in the Poltava region by O. and Y. Kaplevsky, by selecting from Champagne (silver) rabbits. One account says local black does were crossed with Champagne bucks.

Typical Adult Size

A large rabbit: adults weigh about 4.5 to 5.4 kg (10 to 12 pounds), with a body length of about 57 cm.

Coat Type

Dense, glossy fur.

Colors

Silver, in dark, medium and light shades.

Temperament

Usually calm.

Grooming and Care

As a large breed, it needs a roomy enclosure, daily exercise, plenty of hay and fresh water.

Distinctive Features

A large, solid body and a silvered coat like that of the Champagne d’Argent.

What Makes It Notable

It is one of Ukraine’s best-known native breeds, kept for meat and fur.
