The Little Sanctuary

A small shelter can make a large room feel like home. Nestled inside woven hay on the church pew, the rabbit turns toward the straw and lowers her head beneath the colored light. The tenderness is in the preparation: someone has made a place suited to her need for rest.

“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
Psalm 4:8 (KJV)

Psalm 4 is an evening prayer that moves through distress toward trust. Its closing words express the psalmist’s confidence in God as he lies down. Rest comes at the end of a prayer that has made room for difficulty, reflection, and dependence.

The shelter on the pew gives that trust an intimate setting. It reminds us how much care can be expressed through practical arrangements: a comfortable place, a quieter room, or the chance to stop being responsible for every detail for a while.

We can bring our unfinished concerns to God as the day closes and accept the support that helps us rest. We can also consider who around us might need a little more comfort or consideration. Lord, receive what we cannot resolve tonight, and help us make our homes and relationships places where weary people can settle.
