The Long Hop Home

A lighted window can give a long path its purpose. With the church glowing beyond the mist, the rabbit keeps moving between the wildflowers and stone walls, one hop after another. The scene’s warmth lies in the sense of having somewhere to arrive.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”
Psalm 23:6 (KJV)

This verse closes Psalm 23, whose journey has already included green pastures, dark valleys, and a table of welcome. The assurance of goodness and mercy belongs to that whole journey, including its difficult stretches. The psalm ends with the hope of enduring nearness to God.

The rabbit’s route toward the church offers a visible expression of that longing to belong. For us, home can mean the relationships and places where we are known, received, and able to lay down our guard. Faith gives that longing a further horizon in the care of God.

We may not see the entire road ahead, but familiar acts of prayer, kindness, and trust can help give our days direction. May we recognize the goodness that has accompanied us so far, and extend some of that welcome to others making their own way along the road.
