The Luminous Landing

Of all the places a firefly might settle, the tip of a rabbit’s ear makes a particularly charming choice. The little landing brings the meadow’s scattered lights close enough to become part of his silhouette. His stillness gives us time to enjoy how small and unexpected the encounter is.

“For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.”
Psalm 18:28 (KJV)

Psalm 18 gives thanks for deliverance and strength received from God. Lighting the psalmist’s lamp is an image of renewed hope and ability to continue. The surrounding song remembers danger while celebrating the help that has carried him through it.

The firefly offers a delicate visual companion to that image. A small light can matter within a much larger darkness, just as a modest encouragement can reach us in the middle of an unresolved concern. Its value does not depend on changing everything at once.

We may remember a sentence someone spoke at the right time, a visit, or a practical kindness that made the next part of the day easier. Such care is worth receiving and offering. May we notice the encouragement that comes near, and be willing to bring a little of it to someone else.
