Morning Through the Barn Door

An open doorway can make a new day feel like an invitation. The rabbit pauses as morning fills the barn, then hops toward the misty pasture beyond. That brief hesitation gives the departure its tenderness: there is time to take in the light before stepping into it.

“Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.”
Isaiah 58:8 (KJV)

Isaiah 58 connects this promise with a call to meaningful faith expressed through justice and care. The preceding verses speak of freeing the oppressed, feeding the hungry, sheltering the poor, and clothing those in need. The promised dawn belongs to a life and community being renewed through that response. “Rereward” means a rear guard, expressing protection from behind.

The opening barn doors provide a vivid picture of fresh light, while the passage asks what we will do within it. A new beginning gains substance through the choices that follow: noticing a need, sharing what we have, or changing a practice that harms someone else.

We can welcome the possibility of a brighter day and help make it brighter for another person. Lord, give us eyes to see where care is needed, and the willingness to carry our gratitude into action as we step forward.
