The Baby’s Turn

Sometimes kindness is a single step backward. When the larger rabbit moves aside, the little one can finally reach the water, stretching up on uncertain legs while its companion stays close. The sweetness of the moment is in the space deliberately left for someone smaller.

“And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only…”
Matthew 10:42 (KJV, excerpt)

Jesus speaks these words while instructing his disciples about their mission and the welcome they will receive. The verse continues by honoring the person who offers even this small refreshment to one of his disciples. A cup of water, given with care, matters within the work of hospitality.

The shared drinking place gives us a simple picture of that practical generosity. The need is ordinary, and meeting it requires attention rather than ceremony. The larger rabbit’s movement changes what the little one is able to do.

In our own communities, we may be well placed to notice who cannot easily reach what others take for granted. Making room, offering assistance, or waiting patiently can turn goodwill into something useful. May we be attentive enough to see the small need before us and generous enough to respond, even when the kindness seems too ordinary to mention.
