Autumn Has a Secret

The leaf pile appears to be keeping an excellent secret until a rabbit rises out of its middle. A yellow leaf then settles between his ears, completing a small autumn coronation he seems perfectly willing to accept. The surprise turns an ordinary heap of fallen leaves into a moment of comedy and delight.

“He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.”
Daniel 2:22 (KJV)

Daniel speaks these words in thanksgiving after God reveals the king’s dream and its meaning. Faced with a mystery beyond human ability, Daniel and his companions have sought God’s mercy. His response credits God with the wisdom and knowledge they needed.

The rabbit’s emergence gives us a playful glimpse of something previously hidden. The biblical passage concerns a much weightier revelation, but both invite us to consider the limits of what we can see from the outside.

In our own lives, uncertainty can call for patience, prayer, and the humility to seek help. We rarely understand the whole situation at first glance. There may be information still to learn, or a perspective we have not yet considered. May we remain teachable in what we do not understand, and ready to welcome the occasional happy surprise along the way.
