Why Do We Appreciate Too Late?

Maddie is settled on her favorite window seat again, pink scarf tied neatly, with floral cushions and a knitted throw piled around her as the afternoon sun comes through the glass. Today’s Afternoon Bunny Observation is a tender one. It notices that people often see how much someone mattered only once that person is no longer near, and it asks why appreciation so often arrives late.

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

Paul places this line right beside two others, rejoice evermore and pray without ceasing, as if thankfulness were simply part of the rhythm of ordinary faith. Giving thanks in every thing does not mean pretending every situation is good. It means looking for God’s goodness within each one, including the people He has placed beside us right now.

Gratitude spoken too late can turn into regret. The remedy is surprisingly simple: say it now. A short message, a phone call, or a sincere thank you over dinner can let someone know what they mean while they are still close enough to hear it. Today is a good day to notice the people who are easiest to take for granted.
