Gratitude

Preacher Paul has taken his usual place at the foot of the wooden pulpit, tie straight and ears tall, while morning light falls across the red carpet and the white altar cloth behind him. This morning’s prayer is one of simple thanks. It thanks God for a new day and a fresh start, and asks for eyes that notice the blessings we usually walk right past.

“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.”
1 Chronicles 16:34 (KJV)

In 1 Chronicles 16, David appoints singers to give thanks as the ark is brought home to Jerusalem, and this line becomes the refrain of their song. The reason for thanks is not found in circumstances but in who God is. He is good, and His mercy never runs out. Thankfulness here rests on His character rather than on how the day feels.

Gratitude has a way of changing what we see. The same morning can feel ordinary or full of grace depending on whether we stop to count what we have been given. Before the list of tasks takes over, it is worth naming a few good things out loud: breath, light, people we love, and the chance to begin again.
