There is real relief in being washed. David’s prayer is not polished; it is the honest request of someone who knows he needs to be made clean, thoroughly, all the way through. Confession can sound heavy, but this verse carries a kind of lightness. It trusts that God is willing to do the washing. A field of daisies after rain has that same freshly rinsed look, as though the whole world has been given a second start. Whatever needs to be set down today, it can be named plainly and handed over. Mercy is not reluctant. A small amen is enough to begin.
