Jonah prayed these words from the belly of a great fish, about as far from control as a person can get. And from there he arrived at the simplest truth: salvation is of the LORD. It does not come from our cleverness, our goodness, or our ability to fix things. It comes from God. That can be humbling, but it is also a relief. We do not have to save ourselves. Jonah’s prayer was answered, and he was given another chance. Whatever depths you find yourself in, God’s rescue is not limited by where you are.
