Zemmouri
A hardy local meat rabbit from Morocco.

Origin
The Zemmouri is a local Moroccan rabbit. From 1912 onward, European rabbits brought to Morocco by religious communities were bred with native stock in Azrou in the Middle Atlas and Temara near Rabat, and this interbreeding probably produced the Zemmouri.
Typical Adult Size
A medium-sized rabbit, about 49 cm long. Bucks weigh about 2.7 kg at first service and does about 2.15 kg at first mating.
Coat Type
Ordinary short fur.
Colors
It is a local population with no fixed show color.
Temperament
Researchers describe it as docile.
Grooming and Care
It is adapted to a wide range of temperatures, roughly 3 to 37 °C, but is less resistant to viral hemorrhagic disease, so vaccination is important where it is available.
Distinctive Features
A convex head, maroon eyes, upright ears and a medium-sized body.
What Makes It Notable
In 2002 its population was estimated at more than 10,000 and it was not considered in danger of extinction. Its skin is used in traditional crafts.
