An ordinary departure can carry an unspoken prayer: keep me, and bring me home. We may feel it as we leave for work, begin an unfamiliar journey, or wait for someone we love to return. Psalm 121 gives that quiet longing words, placing the daily movement of our lives within God’s enduring care.
“The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”
Psalm 121:8 (KJV)
This psalm begins by looking toward the hills and naming the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth, as the source of help. It repeatedly describes him as a keeper who neither slumbers nor sleeps. Its final verse gathers the whole journey into that assurance: our departures and returns, the present moment and the years beyond it.
When we pray with these words, we bring both our plans and our uncertainty before God. We cannot oversee every road or remain beside everyone we love. Faith gives us a way to entrust that concern to the one whose care reaches beyond our own, while meeting the day with attention and responsibility.
Lord, keep us in our going out and our coming in. Give us wisdom for the road ahead, comfort when we are far from what is familiar, and grateful hearts for the welcome of home. Hold those we love in your care, wherever this day may take them. Amen.
