A familiar voice can make the approaching night feel less lonely. Beneath the blanket, the little listeners settle into the story of the ark, hearing once again that Noah and his family are to enter together. The warmth comes as much from being read to as from knowing what happens next.
“But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons’ wives with thee.”
Genesis 6:18 (KJV)
God speaks these words to Noah before the flood, promising a covenant and directing him to bring his family into the ark. The story takes human violence and judgment seriously, while also telling of preservation and the continuation of life. The promise gives Noah a reason to act faithfully amid what he cannot yet see.
Within the bedtime scene, that assurance becomes something passed from one voice to attentive ears. Familiar stories can help us carry questions about fear, responsibility, and hope, especially when someone makes time to explore them with us.
The care involved in reading aloud is itself worth noticing. We offer our attention, keep company, and help another person reach the end of the day feeling remembered. May the words we share before sleep be truthful and kind, giving those who hear them something steady to rest upon.
