Known by Gentle Hands

Being held gently has a way of making the rest of the world feel less urgent. In the flowered meadow, the small rabbit rests in two cupped hands, close enough to be supported without being crowded. The tenderness of the moment lies in how little it asks of him.

“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.”
Psalm 23:2 (KJV)

Psalm 23 describes God’s care through the image of a shepherd. Green pasture and quiet water provide what the sheep need for nourishment and rest. The psalm later travels through danger as well, so its peace belongs to a larger story of guidance and companionship through changing circumstances.

The meadow and careful hands offer a gentle picture of that sustaining care. We often spend our days being useful, staying alert, or trying to anticipate what comes next. Rest can feel unfamiliar when we have grown accustomed to carrying responsibility.

This verse gives us language for trusting God with our need to be restored. It also reminds us of the kind of care we can offer one another: attentive, patient, and considerate of weariness. May we receive the rest we need and help make room for someone else to do the same.
