The rabbit’s wisest move is the one that lets the encounter end. After noticing the danger across the desert path, he turns and takes another route, carrying his small, unharmed life back into the open evening. The relief comes from seeing clear attention become a sensible choice.
“Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”
Matthew 10:16 (KJV, excerpt)
Jesus gives this instruction as he sends his disciples into circumstances where they will face opposition. Wisdom and innocence belong together: they must recognize danger while remaining faithful in their conduct. The call asks for discernment without malice.
The rabbit’s departure offers a simple picture of knowing when to move away. In our own lives, we may face a hostile conversation, an escalating disagreement, or pressure to participate in something harmful. Sometimes the responsible response is to pause, seek help, or leave the situation.
Choosing distance can protect our ability to act with integrity. We can refuse provocation without pretending it is harmless, and preserve kindness without surrendering judgment. May we learn to see circumstances clearly, choose our responses carefully, and recognize when another path will allow us to continue in peace.
