Be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. Jesus sent His disciples out with a surprising instruction: be shrewd and innocent at the same time. The world can be a difficult place, and naivety is not a virtue. But neither is cynicism. Jesus calls His followers to a balanced wisdom that sees clearly and acts kindly. A desert trail at sunset, beautiful but rugged, captures that combination. Walk wisely through the world, with eyes open and heart pure.
