At the Edge of Everything

Coastal cliffs covered in wildflowers above a sparkling sea at sunset.

“Till he fill thy mouth with laughing, and thy lips with rejoicing.”

Job 8:21 (KJV)

These words come from an unlikely place: Job’s friend Bildad, speaking during Job’s darkest season. His theology was often wrong, but this hope turned out to be true in the end. God did restore laughter and joy to Job’s mouth. Sometimes we stand at the edge of everything familiar, unsure what comes next. The verse reminds us that sorrow is not the final chapter for those who belong to God. There is laughter on the far side of grief, even if we cannot hear it yet. Stand at the edge for a while, look out over the water, and let hope have the last word.
