“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:”
1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)
Peter’s warning is sober, and it comes from someone who knew failure firsthand. Stay alert, he says, because there is an adversary who looks for an opening. Peace can make us careless. A beautiful evening, comfortable routines, and quiet days are gifts, but they are not reasons to stop paying attention to our hearts. Vigilance here is not anxiety. It is wakefulness, staying close to God, honest about our weak spots, and quick to return when we drift. The next verse tells us to resist, steadfast in faith. Rest, yes. But rest awake.
